Lately it seems as though the conversation around hormones is increasing, which is a great discussion to have. Since hormones influence the health and function of the brain, this is a topic we’ve been discussing and navigating with our clients for years at A Mind For All Seasons.

Now, when you think about hormones you might go straight to thoughts of menopause or andropause (the male version of menopause) and visions of hot flashes and mood swings. But hormones are so much more than that!

Dr. Mary Claire Haver said, “Every hormone has its task, and together they create a symphony of balance and well-being.” This is a true statement that is applicable to nearly every stage of life, as hormones are always present in our bodies, playing a key role in development, overall mental health, brain function, and more.

Let’s consider the ways that hormonal changes affect the brain.

First, fluctuations in hormones can result in attention, memory, and cognitive processing changes. For example, estrogen levels fluctuate throughout life as it plays a vital role in the female reproductive system. In addition, the heart, bones, skin, and…you guessed it! the brain are affected by this specific hormone. Another essential task delegated to estrogen is that of protecting against cognitive decline and supporting synaptic plasticity, neurons that impact memory, learning, and brain development. This is just one of many examples of the ways that changing hormones influence brain health and function.

Let’s not forget the fact that two out of every three Alzheimer’s patients are women. Many studies are being conducted to show the possible relation between this horrific disease and menopause, particularly the lowered levels of estrogen as women age.

It's likely safe to say that along with estrogen, testosterone is one of the most well-known hormones. Both are closely linked to mood regulation with evidence showing that when estrogen and testosterone are lowered, the risk of depression and anxiety are higher. The impact of these conditions on an individual’s daily life is detrimental, and they wreak havoc on the brain as well. When hormones are fluctuating, sleep patterns can be disrupted. The lack of quality sleep impacts nearly every aspect of life and cognitive function is no exception. As though trapped in a vicious cycle, if we aren’t sleeping well, we are more susceptible to chronic stress, and when we are stressed, we don’t sleep well. This is damaging to our ability to be emotionally resilient and also interferes with memory and focus.

An option for addressing fluctuating hormones is Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT. This treatment can help relieve the cognitive and emotional symptoms associated with changes in hormone levels and should be discussed with a trusted healthcare provider.

Establishing healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced nutrition, managing stress, and learning new skills can all play an essential role as hormonal changes impact the brain and aspects of daily life. Understanding the influence of hormones on cognitive health is important, and so is knowing that you’re not alone. Turning to a support system as well as staying informed and proactive when it comes to matters of health makes all the difference in finding solutions, leading a balanced life, and attaining a sense of wellness.
