You’ve likely heard the term ‘microplastics’, but did you know that all plastic particles measuring smaller than five millimeters and originated from larger plastic debris are categorized by this term? Now think about the fact that these microplastics are literally in everything, from the air we breathe to the food we eat. Even found in our water, microplastics are practically impossible to avoid and have long-term effects. Although these lasting impacts are currently being researched, initial findings point to significant harm in regards to brain health.
By triggering an inflammatory response within the brain, oxidative stress is also induced. Both of these factors contribute to neurodegenerative diseases as well as cognitive decline, and they can even accelerate aging. The fact that microplastics have been studied for their ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier which serves to shield the brain from harmful substances is incredibly concerning due to resulting cellular damage and interference with learning and memory. Another distressing impact of microplastics is the disruption of hormones. Because the microplastics contain chemicals that mimic hormones, the chance of them interfering with the body’s natural hormonal balance is high and can have similar effects as that of breaking through the blood-brain barrier.
By this point you might be panicking, overwhelmed with the concept that miniscule pieces of plastic are traversing within you. Yes, this fact is deeply troubling, but there are also steps we can take to reduce our exposure to microplastics.
The first is pretty obvious, minimize plastic use, though it’s easier said than done in today’s world. Replacing plastic water bottles with a reusable alternative like glass or stainless steel is a great option, and filtering your drinking water is another proactive step to take.
Along with avoiding plastic water bottles, try doing the same with food containers and shopping bags. When at the grocery store, try to avoid products packaged in plastic, as processed and packaged foods often contain microplastics themselves.
One of the most important tips: Do not heat plastic. This causes the chemicals to literally leech into your food. For more information on this topic, visit:

Taking on an active role and advocating for polices aimed at reducing plastic waste can be an effective route. These initiatives protect the environment while also reducing plastic production and consumption, as well as lowering the potential for microplastics to contaminate our food and water supplies.
This emerging concern requires awareness and taking practical steps, but it is possible to reduce exposure and protect our brain health. Minimizing microplastics is crucial for our quality of life and overall well-being.
