Think about the diet of an average American child.
What percentage of that diet would you guess is made up of ultra-processed food? Products created to be addictive, with little to no nutritional value?
70%
That’s right. Less than 30% of what we are feeding our kids can be considered nutritional, with the majority of it hardly classifiable as ‘food’. This is great news for the industries behind these products which, by the way, are the same ones who filled their pockets by selling tobacco. Let that sink in.
Using the same science of addiction that made cigarettes profitable, these corporations have once again chosen to put dollars over the health of consumers by making processed foods that are addictive. The result is a nation struggling with obesity and health issues, both physical and mental, to which our children are not immune. In fact, they are quite possibly the largest casualty.
Dr. Marty Makary said, “We have poisoned our food supply, and when people get sick, we medicate them. We need to stop playing what-a-mole with health issues and start addressing the root causes.” This outlook is one aspect fueling the growing movement of functional medicine today, a concept driven by putting the patient first when approaching treatment and is based on the root cause of illness, discovering the ‘why’ instead of putting a bandage on the ‘what’. Functional medicine is a major factor in A Mind For All Season’s approach, as we believe that everyone is unique with a variety of factors impacting their health such as genetics, stress, diet, and lifestyle. We also firmly believe that identifying the root cause of an illness or issue is essential to achieving wellness rather than relying solely on pharmaceuticals, though we also believe that modern medicine certainly has it’s place and value on the path to overall health.
That being said, diet plays a vital role in the way we feel and there is endless data, science, and lived examples that all point to the same conclusion:
Changing what we eat can change our lives.
If we can shift from reactive treatments toward proactive health, the future can and will look much brighter for us and our children. What will it take for us to realize that the future of our kids’ health begins with the decisions that we make today? If change is what we truly want, we have got to face the fact that our current habits are literally killing us. Jillian Michaels said, “We need to get back to the basics. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. It's about making small, consistent choices-like cooking at home more often and choosing whole foods over processed ones.” For more information and ways to implement healthy eating, check out this article reviewed by Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph, MD

These healthier choices don’t just impact the body, they have positive impacts on brain health as well. When we eat better, we feel better, and we can live a healthier, happier life. Isn’t this what we want for our children as opposed to a generation susceptible to cognitive decline, obesity, disease, and food addiction?
